Retrofitting a Rear-View Camera

My Premium trim didn’t come with a rear-view camera, but it did have front and rear(!) parking sensors. I decided to install a rear-view camera. I didn’t bother doing the install myself and found someone to do it.

The hardest part of the install is taking apart half the cabin and running the wiring.

Since the camera came from a higher-class car – 4M0980556A – getting it to work properly required switching the firmware to 5Q0980556B and loading the parameter set from a Škoda Octavia 7.

Once done, the camera works with trajectory guide lines and the parking sensor overlay on the camera image.

But the guy who did the install didn’t have a proper camera calibration rig, so I ended up with two fault codes – one for camera calibration, and another for the CAN bus. The first is fixed with a dedicated calibration rig and the ODIS software, and the second by reflashing the gateway with a new parameter set.

For calibration I found a calibration sheet. During calibration in ODIS, instructions for using the sheet pop up. Before calibrating you need to take a couple of measurements – the distance from the start of the image on the sheet to the center of the rear wheel (mm), and the distance from the camera lens to the ground; set the sheet height value to zero, and the wheelbase size should populate automatically.

This is roughly what it’ll look like

Then the car needs to be in park with the handbrake on, reverse gear selected, and only the ignition on. Hit the button in the software to start the calibration process, a debug screen appears on the MIB display, and it configures everything itself.

That’s it – the calibration error goes away. In my case, fixing the CAN bus error required switching the module firmware from 5Q0907530AC / Ver: 2203 to 5Q0907530AM / Ver: 2265; the parameter set also gets wiped during the update, so you need to load a new one for the firmware. It’s also possible that after updating the gateway, only the parking sensors or only the camera will work – the fix for that is updating the parking sensor module firmware from 5Q0919294K to 5Q0919294L, which shouldn’t wipe the parameter set.
