A Light Interior Clean-up

One thing I didn’t quite expect to see after the car arrived in Ukraine was mold. Before shipping the car in the US, everything was dry. I spent a long time wondering where the mold in the car could have come from.

What’s interesting is that the mold was only on the left side behind the driver’s seat, and only in select spots.

To keep the mold from spreading further and deeper, I decided I should get rid of it while the car was sitting in the queue for repairs, waiting for parts.

I grabbed a Koch Mzr cleaner, plain water, sponges and rags.

First I wiped off as much as I could with a sponge and warm water, then went over it thoroughly with the cleaner and rinsed again with water, then aired everything out and dried it. The interior changed noticeably — the mold apparently hadn’t eaten in deep, it was just on the surface.

Sure, it’s not detailing, but since the car still had a long way to go before it was finished, it was a decent enough way to deal with the mold in the meantime.

But a lot of people are probably curious where it came from. It all became clear once the car went in for fender straightening. It turned out that after the impact, the panoramic sunroof’s drain channel got pinched shut, so rainwater kept overflowing and pooling near the pillar — right where the mold showed up.
